On Monday, the Texas Rangers placed outfielder Evan Carter on the 60-day injured list. On Tuesday, Rangers general manager Chris Young gave a disappointing update, indicating that Carter’s season is likely over, according to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
“Chris Young stated that the Rangers do not anticipate Evan Carter returning to play in the regular season. He simply needs more time to rest his back. That’s the situation,” Grant shared on X, formerly Twitter.
Carter made a strong impression during his first 23 MLB regular-season games in 2023, earning a spot on the playoff roster and becoming a postseason standout. Despite not officially having a rookie season in the MLB yet, expectations were high for Carter in 2024.
Carter has played only 45 games this season due to injuries, with a batting line of .188/.272/.361/.633 during that time. Clearly, he hasn’t been the same player who contributed to the Rangers’ World Series win in 2023.
The 21-year-old continues to struggle with a persistent back injury. While fans had hoped for his return in 2024, it now seems unlikely that he will make it back before 2025 unless he makes an unexpected recovery and surprises the Rangers.
The Rangers had a relatively uneventful trade deadline. While they didn’t part with any star players, they also didn’t secure any high-profile additions.
On the positive side, Jacob deGrom is showing signs of improvement, and his return could provide a crucial boost for the team. Additionally, Tyler Mahle might play a significant role for the Rangers as the season progresses.
Having won the World Series in 2023, the Rangers appear to have confidence in their current roster. However, Evan Carter’s absence will be felt.
