Nathaniel Lowe hit a two-run homer, and Nathan Eovaldi delivered six strong innings as the Texas Rangers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 on Monday night, ending their three-game losing streak.
Wyatt Langford contributed three hits for the Rangers, who have posted a 6-5 record since the All-Star break. Additional run support came from Corey Seager, Jonah Heim, Adolis Garcia, and Leody Taveras.
Matt Carpenter hit a home run for the Cardinals, who have now lost four of their last five games.
Lowe’s 407-foot home run, his ninth of the season, came off Chris Roycroft in the sixth inning, giving the Rangers a 6-2 lead.
“I think I’m just making better swing decisions,” Lowe commented. “Just offering at stuff I have a chance to drive.”
Closer Kirby Yates recorded his 19th save of the season.
Eovaldi (8-4) gave up three runs on six hits in an 82-pitch performance. The 34-year-old right-hander struck out two batters and did not issue a walk, extending his streak to six consecutive games without a walk, covering 43 innings.
His last walk was in the third inning of a June 26 game against Milwaukee. Eovaldi has struck out 32 batters in his six July appearances.
Eovaldi has set a franchise record by facing 166 consecutive hitters without issuing a walk, the longest streak in the majors this season, surpassing Zach Eflin’s previous mark of 165 consecutive hitters without a walk from April 26 to June 16.
“He knows how to turn it up a notch when he has to,” said Texas manager Bruce Bochy. “He’s done that his whole career.”
Eovaldi changed his uniform and undershirt after each inning due to the extreme heat index of around 100 degrees (38 Celsius).
“Everybody’s out there sweating; it’s kind of tough to get a good grip on the ball,” Eovaldi noted. “You try and go out there and attack. They’re going through the same thing that we’ve going through.”
Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien made a critical diving stop on a bases-loaded line drive, initiating a double play that ended the inning in the seventh.
Texas took control with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, with Heim tying the game with a run-scoring hit and Taveras giving the Rangers the lead with a run-producing grounder to first base.
“A well-played game by us,” Bochy said. “What I like is that we had contributions throughout the order. A lot of guys did things that helped win that ball game.”
Carpenter, who was inserted into the starting lineup due to his success against Eovaldi, hit his third home run of the season in the third inning. He had previously accumulated six hits in 12 career at-bats against Eovaldi.
Andre Pallante (4-5) allowed three earned runs on seven hits over five innings, with two walks and five strikeouts in the loss.
“I didn’t pitch as well as I’m capable of,” Pallante said. “I thought I made some mistakes over the heart of the plate.”
Earlier in the day, reigning World Series champion Texas traded veteran right-hander Michael Lorenzen to the Kansas City Royals for minor league left-handed reliever Walter Pennington ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. The Cardinals acquired starting pitcher Erick Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham from the Chicago White Sox as part of a three-team deal.
