According to Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa will not participate in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game. Instead, Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager has been named as his replacement on the roster.
Carlos Correa still intends to travel to Texas to participate in the festivities surrounding the All-Star Game with his family, despite not playing in the actual game. He is managing plantar fasciitis, making it sensible for him to take a break leading up to the Minnesota Twins’ return to action on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers at home.
On the other hand, Corey Seager was initially not part of the American League team, but he now has the opportunity to join and play in the All-Star Game at his home stadium. This arrangement is convenient for him since he doesn’t have to travel far, and it gives Rangers fans another player to support alongside Marcus Semien.
How are Corey Seager and Carlos Correa performing this season?
Carlos Correa is having a standout season with the Twins, currently boasting a .308 batting average, a .377 on-base percentage, and an .896 OPS, translating to a 152 wRC+ according to FanGraphs. He has already accumulated 3.6 WAR, surpassing his disappointing 2023 mark of 1.9 and on pace to exceed his solid 4.6 WAR from his first year with the Twins in 2022. Correa has shown a resurgence at the plate compared to last season, where his wRC+ was just 92. Defensively, he has been solid with 1 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and 4 Outs Above Average (OAA).
However, there is concern about Correa managing plantar fasciitis, which affected his ability to secure large contracts with the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets during their physical exams. Despite these challenges, Correa returned to form with the Twins. Monitoring his foot condition will be crucial not only for the remainder of this season but also for his career going forward.
On the other hand, Corey Seager has been productive for the Rangers this season despite their disappointing first half, where they currently stand at 46-50. Seager’s batting average is .272 with a .356 on-base percentage and an .840 OPS, resulting in a 130 wRC+ per FanGraphs. While this is slightly down from his outstanding 169 wRC+ in 2023, it remains a solid performance considering his contributions in over 100 games played.
The Rangers, currently five games behind first place in the American League West, rely on Seager’s productivity to stay competitive. As they approach the trade deadline, Seager’s consistent performance becomes increasingly crucial, potentially complemented by new additions to bolster their roster.
