Rangers general manager Chris Young emphasized on Wednesday morning that the team is facing a critical juncture and cannot afford to delay turning their season around.
“It’s crucial,” he stated. “We can’t afford to sit back and wait, hoping things will fall into place. It’s imperative for us to step up now. Offensively, we need to perform at the level we’re capable of. I have full confidence in our players, but we haven’t met our own expectations. The reality is, we need to step up our game.
“We’ve put ourselves in a tough spot, but I believe strongly that we can bounce back. It’s time for us to take action and get back on track.”
As a response, the Rangers decided to send utilityman Ezequiel Duran down to Triple-A Round Rock and brought outfielder Derek Hill back up in his place before the series finale against the Brewers on Wednesday. Young emphasized that performance is crucial in their decision-making process, noting that Duran hadn’t reached the expected level of play at this stage.
“We’re in need of tangible results,” Young remarked regarding the team’s offensive performance overall. “We’re aiming to inject some energy into our offense. It’s time for us to showcase our offensive potential.”
Despite the challenges, there was a positive development on Wednesday as the offense performed exceptionally well, registering 10 hits. This included consecutive home runs by Nathaniel Lowe and Jonah Heim, along with a single by Hill in his return to the majors, indicating a promising turnaround for the team’s offensive capabilities.
The bad thing is that it didn’t matter in the end. Milwaukee handed Texas its first extra-inning loss of the season in walk-off fashion, 6-5 in 10 innings.
This is the fourth time the Rangers have been swept this year, following series in Colorado, Philadelphia and Seattle. Texas has only been swept on the road.
“We were in all three [of these games],” said manager Bruce Bochy. “Little things got us today. We did swing the bats better and that’s always a great sign but [the Brewers] are good and they play well. But we could have won every one of these games, we feel like.”
Though the offense only broke out in one inning — the Rangers still scored more runs on Wednesday (five) than they did in the previous two games of the sweep combined (four) – it was still unable to produce much of anything after that.
Currently, the Rangers are actively seeking solutions, evident from the recent roster switch between Duran and Hill. It appears that internal upgrades are in progress, at least for the time being. The course of action leading up to the Trade Deadline remains uncertain.
“It will be based on performance,” Young emphasized. “The truth is, anyone performing well in Triple-A will have a chance here. We’ll field a team that gives us the best chance to win, prioritizing players who are in good form. Offensively, we haven’t met our potential. Some players haven’t delivered as expected, and if that doesn’t change, we’ll favor those who are in top form because our goal is to compete and win. Those who perform will earn their opportunities, and we’ll put them in the lineup to ignite our team.”
