Corey Seager continued his impressive streak by hitting his seventh home run in as many games, propelling the Texas Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night, in a rematch of last year’s World Series.
Seager’s three-run homer off Brandon Pfaadt (2-4) in the fifth inning put the Rangers ahead for good, securing the final score. This marked Seager’s 12th home run of the season and his second consecutive multi-homer game, following his two-homer performance against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. His hitting streak extended to a season-best 11 games, while his on-base streak reached 21 games.
The pivotal inning began with consecutive singles by Jonah Heim and Travis Jankowski before Marcus Semien reached on a fielder’s choice.
Andrew Heaney (1-6) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief after starter Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi, activated from the injured list, pitched for the Rangers instead of undergoing a rehab game. David Robertson pitched a perfect eighth inning before Kirby Yates closed the game in the ninth, securing his eighth save of the season, but his first since May 8.
In the sixth inning, Arizona (25-29) loaded the bases with one out before a double play resulted from reliever Grant Anderson’s first pitch. Eugenio Suárez hit a fly ball to right fielder Adolis García, who threw out Joc Pederson at home plate with a precise throw to catcher Heim, overturning the initial safe call after a quick Rangers challenge.
The Diamondbacks scored both of their runs off Eovaldi in the second inning, starting with consecutive doubles by Christian Walker and Pavin Smith. Suárez added a sacrifice fly, caught by first baseman Nathaniel Lowe in foul territory while moving away from home plate.
In terms of roster updates, rookie outfielder Evan Carter was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lumbar sprain, while outfielder Wyatt Langford was activated from the IL after a hiatus since May 4 due to a right hamstring strain. Langford went 0 for 3 as the designated hitter.
The series concludes with a quick turnaround, playing two games within 24 hours, with a day game scheduled for Wednesday. Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson (3-3, 6.03 ERA) and Rangers right-hander Dane Dunning (3-3, 4.43 ERA) are slated to start.
