The manager of Texas also discusses the team’s efforts to cope with a sudden surge of injuries affecting the roster.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy appeared on the K&C Masterpiece show on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] to talk about Marcus Semien’s reliability and the team’s sense of pride. Responses have been lightly edited for clarity.
Bruce Bochy: I’ll be honest, it’s frustrating to see the type of injuries and the number of them. You know you’re gonna deal with them and we talk about it all the time, and how important it is to keep pushing but this is piling on. It should be 15 yards here the way we’re getting hammered. I look at [Adolis García] for example. [Marcus Semien], when you look at it, it looks like he really took the brunt of that and it turns out with the triceps and everything García is one that’s missing time. We’re hoping he can DH. I don’t have a lineup out yet. It’s one of those times now where you’d have to wait for your trainers before you can even do a lineup and see who can go. We’re trying to get on a roll. We’re trying to be consistent with the lineup the pitching and it’s been frustrating.
Following a championship season, you have an idea of what that team can do. When do you get into the next year and think about changing your definition of this team based on what they’re doing this year versus what they did last year?
Bochy: It’s hard to have that definition when you’re going through the rash of injuries that we’re dealing with. I go back to the first year in 2010, when we had won a championship. The following year, we lost [Buster Posey] with that home plate collision, but we had a rash of them then too. We’re just hoping to get this out of the way. I think once we do get our core guys, and that’s gonna be a while. Josh Jung is not close. But get [Adolis García] out there, get [Evan Carter] going, get these guys doing what they’re supposed to do. I still believe we’re gonna get on a roll. I don’t feel any complacency or anything like that with this group. That’s not the case at all. They’re going hard, and they’re trying. Believe me. But still, it’s hard to play this game if you’re not completely healthy. It’s not an excuse. It’s just the fact that we got to get these guys back.
What have you seen in Derek Hill that makes you think his success will translate and make an impact in the lineup?
Bochy: We’re looking for a little shot in the arm and he gave us that, especially against left handers. He goes out there and gets a couple of hits off a tough lefty, was not afraid to steal, he took off. I loved it. I absolutely loved it. This guy plays with no fear. He’s got a lot of energy. He just has fun with the guys. That was what we needed last night. We still couldn’t break through. I got to see where we’re at because I got to get [Evan Carter] going. We got a string of right handers going now. I talked to him yesterday. He’s another speed guy. We’ve seen what he can do with the bat. I got to run him out there. [Adolis García] may DH, if anything. As far as Hill, if I don’t play him he’s a nice weapon to have come off the bench.
