Manager Bruce Bochy gave updates on injured Rangers in his media availability ahead of Monday’s series opener vs. the Cleveland Guardians.
Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy’s pregame media sessions have increasingly focused on extensive medical updates. However, Monday’s briefing, held before the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians at Globe Life Field, may have delivered some positive updates.
Outfielder Wyatt Langford, who has been dealing with a hamstring strain, mentioned that he has started running at around “85 to 90 percent” of his usual speed and resumed hitting on Saturday. He can continue hitting as long as it doesn’t aggravate his hamstring, and he stated that the next phase is to reintroduce explosive movements like base running.
Langford was placed on the injured list on May 5 and is eligible to return no earlier than May 15. Another rookie, Evan Carter, who has been dealing with a lower back issue, underwent an MRI on Monday and will not be included in the starting lineup against the Guardians.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy mentioned before the game that he doesn’t have any additional information regarding Carter’s condition beyond that. Carter reported stiffness in his lower back on Sunday and was absent from the lineup in the series finale against the Colorado Rockies.
Regarding the pitching situation: Nathan Eovaldi (dealing with a groin strain), Dane Dunning (recovering from a rotator cuff strain), and Cody Bradford (dealing with a back strain) all engaged in some form of pitching activity on Monday. Dunning, who was placed on the injured list last Wednesday, threw from a distance of 90 feet and noted that his arm has started to feel stronger. He intends to maintain his throwing regimen to gradually enhance his arm strength.
Eovaldi sought consultation from a specialist in New York the previous Monday, and it was determined that he did not sustain a more severe injury. On Monday, he joined Dunning in throwing at the Globe Life Field outfield, and Bochy mentioned that Eovaldi might be able to resume mound throwing starting this weekend.
