Rookie Wyatt Langford was placed on the 10-day injured list ahead of Monday’s Texas Rangers series opener in Oakland. Infielder Jonathan Ornelas has been recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
Infielder Jonathan Ornelas has been promoted from Triple-A Round Rock to fill Wyatt Langford’s spot on the Texas Rangers’ 26-man roster.
Langford was sidelined with a right hamstring strain sustained during Saturday’s game in Kansas City, prompting his placement on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 5. His performance this season saw him bat .224 with one home run and 11 RBI in 31 games.
The Rangers kick off a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics at 8:40 p.m. on Monday, followed by a doubleheader on Wednesday. The road trip concludes with a three-game set against the Rockies in Denver starting on Friday.
Ornelas, 23, made eight MLB appearances in 2023, registering a 1-for-7 record. At Round Rock, he boasts a .278 batting average with two homers and 11 RBI across 24 games. Notably, he has started 17 games at shortstop and seven at second base. During spring training, Ornelas participated in 18 major league games, hitting .240 with two doubles and two RBI before returning to minor league camp on March 10.
Originally selected as the Rangers’ third-round pick (No. 91 overall) in the 2018 MLB Draft, Ornelas also possesses versatility, having played center field and third base.
Langford, drafted fourth overall in July’s MLB Draft, struggled offensively before his injury, recording just 9 hits in 52 at-bats over his last 15 games. Following a three-hit performance on April 24, Langford managed just three hits in his subsequent 28 at-bats, driving in two runs.
While veteran outfielder Derek Hill, batting .337 with eight doubles, six homers, and 12 RBI, could have been a replacement option, his inclusion would have necessitated a 40-man roster adjustment since Hill is not currently on the Rangers’ 40-man roster.
