At Dodger Stadium on Saturday, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 11-2. The Dodgers offense blasted several home runs in the game, including one from Japanese prodigy Shohei Ohtani.
With his eighth home run of the season in the third inning, Ohtani broke the previous mark for the most home runs by a Japanese-born player in Dodgers history. Dave Roberts, the current manager of the Dodgers, previously held the record after hitting seven home runs for the team between 2002 and 2004.
Roberts was born to a Japanese mother and an American father in Okinawa, Japan. The Dodgers manager made a joke before Ohtani broke the mark, suggesting that the two-way superstar should get him a Porsche when he did.
Roberts was given a Porsche by Shohei Ohtani, but it was only a toy model that caught the captain off unprepared.
Ohtani stated via interpreter Will Ireton, “He said he wаnted a car and I’m glad he was happy that he got a car.” “I hope to do more of these because I like making people laugh.”
Dave Roberts showcased the toy Porsche and congratulated Shohei Ohtani on breаking the record during his post-game interview.
Roberts remarked, “I’ve gotten different gifts from players, but this is definitely right at the top” (via AP News).
Nonetheless, Ashley Kelly, Joe Kelly’s wife, received a genuine Porsche from Shohei Ohtani as a thank-you gift in December 2023. As promised by Kelly’s wife on social media, Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly gave up his No. 17 jersey to Ohtani.
Dave Roberts finds some parallels between Barry Bonds and Shohei Ohtani.
With three All-Star selections, two AL MVPs, two Silver Slugger trophies, and a plethora of other accomplishments, Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani is regarded as a potential future all-time great.
In a recent conversation about Ohtani, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts compared the 29-year-old to the great Barry Bonds in a few specific ways.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Roberts stated:
“I’m not suggesting that Ohtani is the next Barry Bonds, but it felt like he was always there when I played against him. Ohtani is just that way. The pressure that opposition teams must feel knowing that he is approaching is unfathomable. He is there at all times. It must be a tough situation.
