A couple of weeks back, Marcus Semien had quite the performance against the Detroit Tigers, racking up three hits in a single game and coming tantalizingly close to hitting for the cycle, only missing a triple to complete the feat. Fans were hopeful that the durable slugger would etch his name into the record books, but it wasn’t in the cards.

Hitting for the cycle is a rare and thrilling accomplishment, requiring a player to have an exceptional day at the plate with four hits, coupled with a stroke of luck for one of those hits to result in a triple (often the most challenging part). In light of Semien’s near-miss, it seemed fitting to delve into the history of notable Rangers who have achieved this feat.

Leading off this list is recent Hall of Fame inductee Adrian Beltre, who accomplished the feat twice as a Ranger, making him the only player in the team’s history to do so. His first cycle came on Aug. 24, 2012, against the Minnesota Twins, followed by a second cycle almost exactly three years later on Aug. 3, 2015, against the rival Houston Astros. Interestingly, all three of Beltre’s career cycles occurred at the old Rangers Ballpark, with his initial one happening during his time with the Mariners.

Joining Beltre in this exclusive club is Shin-Soo Choo, who also hit for the cycle in 2015, just 13 days before Beltre’s second achievement. Choo’s milestone occurred at Coors Field against the Rockies, making him the first Asian player in MLB history to achieve this feat.

Another standout Ranger, Ian Kinsler, accomplished the cycle during his tenure in Arlington, a year before the team’s consecutive World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. Kinsler’s cycle came against the Baltimore Orioles on April 15, 2009, and notably, he recorded hits in all six of his at-bats that day.

Mark Teixeira, though more renowned for his time with the Yankees, left his mark on Rangers history by hitting for the cycle in 2004, just his second year with the team. He went on to secure the Silver Slugger award for the best hitting first baseman in the AL in both 2004 and 2005.

However, the most recent cycle in Rangers’ history occurred courtesy of Carlos Gomez on April 29, 2017. Known for his fiery and flamboyant style throughout his career, Gomez fittingly became part of the select group to achieve this exciting feat multiple times, with his first cycle occurring in 2008.

It’s been seven years since a Ranger last hit for the cycle. While Semien narrowly missed out a few weeks ago, fans remain optimistic that he might be the next to achieve this milestone. With the team’s offense showing some early-season struggles in 2024, another standout performance could be just what the Rangers need.
