It was jokingly suggested that Austin Riley, a large country lad, didn’t need to be eating avocado toast, his breakfast pick at a San Diego restaurant last year, while he was having a rough time during the latter few weeks of April.
Riley began to roll as May went on. Thus, on Tuesday night, as he was leaving T-Mobile Park, the third baseman jokingly inquired as to whether it was time to resume eating avocado toast.
Something managed to work.
Riley recorded two hits, including a two-run triple, in a 5-2 victory over the Mariners on Wednesday afternoon, beginning to break free from some terrible luck to open 2024. Chris Sale pitched five scoreless innings to get the win, which kept the Braves from going on a three-game losing streak.
Riley hit an opposite-field triple off the right-field wall to spark a four-run fourth inning. His hit in the third inning assisted Marcell Ozuna in drawing a bases-loaded walk off Emerson Hancock, putting Ronald Acuña Jr. in position to score.
Riley has only had two multihit games since April 11. He had two home runs, a.664 OPS, and other projected numbers that suggested he was about to turn things around going into this series finale, where he was hitting.226.
