During the initial round of this season’s NBA playoffs, Michael Porter Jr. made a significant impact. Despite facing personal challenges off the court, the forward delivered stellar performances in all five games against the Lakers, showcasing his prowess on both offense and defense.
In recent events, one of Porter Jr.’s brothers, Javonte, faced a permanent ban from the NBA due to alleged disclosure of confidential information and involvement in sports betting while playing for the Toronto Raptors. Another brother, Coban, received a six-year prison sentence just ten days ago following a fatal DUI crash in Denver. Porter Jr. testified in court during his brother’s hearing, a day before Game 1.
Despite these challenges, Porter Jr. delivered some of his finest performances in the playoffs. In the series, which the Nuggets won 3-1, he showcased remarkable stats:
Game 1: 19 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 blocks
Game 2: 22 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals
Game 3: 20 points, 10 rebounds
Game 4: 27 points, 11 rebounds, 1 steal
Game 5: 26 points, 4 rebounds
Following Game 1, Porter Jr. shared with reporters his determination to perform at his peak despite the emotional turmoil within his family. He emphasized his commitment to his teammates, stating, “Some bad and sad stuff happened to a couple of my brothers. But I’ve got 15, 16 more brothers in here so I knew I had to be here for them and come in here and do my job and try to do it at a high level.”
Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets’ star center, expressed solidarity with Porter Jr. and emphasized the team’s support during these difficult times. “Of course family is the first thing, but we are some kind of family, too, so hopefully he’s going to find peace and be in a good spot mentally,” Jokic said.
Despite the personal struggles, Porter Jr. rose to the occasion in the series, helping the Nuggets secure a spot in the Western Conference Semifinals with a crucial 108-106 victory on Monday night.
“I’ve been through a lot in my career,” Porter Jr. said. “It was another thing I have to play through.”
