Tuesday night at Truist Park, Adam Duvall launched a two-run home run and Max Fried recorded his third career “Maddux” as the Braves defeated the Marlins 5-0.
Fried finished with a three-Һit shutout in just 92 pitches (69 strikes). A “Maddux,” named for Hall of Fаme pitcher Greg Maddux, is any shutout that a pitcher achieves on fewer than 100 pitches in a full game.
Fried recorded his fourth career shutout and third nine-inning shutout while facing just two more batters than the minimum and striking out six of them. On April 28, 2023, he pitched five innings in a rain-shortened victory over the Mets, and was given credit for a shutout. On September 24, 2021, he had shut out the Padres in nine innings. That was his most recent outing.
It took the left-hander for the Braves 98 pitches to finish that masterpiece in San Diego. On August 20, 2021, against the Orioles, he produced his first career Maddux in just ninety-nine pitches.
Fried may be able to turn things around with this strong effort. After four previous starts, he had a 7.71 ERA. During that time, he only had one successful appearance on April 12 when he shut out the Marlins for one run in 6 1/3 innings.
