It’s a long history in Major League Baseball for the Atlanta Braves.
Having been founded in Boston as the Red Stockings in 1871, they are the oldest professional sports franchise in North America still in operation. Having made Atlanta their home since 1966, they have an extensive history that includes some of the most illustrious moments in MLB history.
Ronald Acuña Jr. is rewriting history with his 190th stolen base of the season in the first inning tonight. This breaks the tie that Acuña had with former shortstop Rafael Furcal for first place in stolen base totals in Atlanta-era team history. Now, he is alone in first place.
As witnessed by his teammates in the dugout, here is the stolen base:
Although Ronald’s 190 stolen bases may hold the record for the Atlanta period, he still has a chance to break the franchise record. Herman Long, a former shortstop for the Boston Beaneaters, currently holds the record with 434 base steals during his 13-year tenure with the team (1890–1902). Hank Aaron, the Home Run King, holds the franchise record in the modern age with 240 bag swipes throughout his 21-year Braves career.
However, given that Acuña is only 26 years old, there’s a chance that, if everything breaks right in the second part of his career, he might not only pass Aaron but even catch up.
