The Atlanta Braves lost 6-4 to the Texas Rangers, ending their winning streak despite Marcell Ozuna’s second home run.
The Braves offense got off to a quick start against Rangers right-hander Michael Lorenzen, as they have much of the season. After Ronald Acuña Jr. Һit to start the game, Michael Harris walked him up to second. After battling back, Lorenzen got ahead 3-0 in the Braves’ first inning by striking out Austin Riley and Matt Olson, but he was unable to stop Ozuna from hitting one into Atlanta’s bullpen.
Darius Vines retired the side in order in the first inning, off to a fantastic start. Nathaniel Lowe scored on a single with one out in the second inning, but Vines gave up no more hits to keep the lead intact. After Andrew Knizner singled to left to start the third, Vines retired the next three batters to maintain the lead at 3-0.
In the fourth, the Rangers retaliated against Vines. With a solo home drive to right to start the inning, Evan Carter tied the score at one. Adolis Garcia was retired by Vines after a ground out, and then Lowe Һit another single to right. Josh Smith reached on an infield single, moving Lowe to second. For the second out, Langford grounded out to second on a close play at first base. Vines attempted to get free, but Knizner intercepted his changeup and drove it out to left, giving the Rangers a 4-3 lead.
Vines returned for the fifth inning, needing just seven pitches to retire Carter, Corey Seager, and Marcus Semien. Garcia launched a rocket double off the bricks in right center to start the sixth. After then, Vines’ night came to an end as Brian Snitker went to his bullpen to get Dylan Lee.
Lee attempted a first out by striking out Lowe. Chadwick Tromp then threw Garcia out while attempting to steаl third. To close the inning, Lee got Smith to fly out to Acuña in right.
Vines had another strong outing aside from a shaky fourth inning. In five innings, he gave up four runs and seven hits. Throwing 74 pitches, he did not walk anyone and struck out two.
After coming back for the seventh, Lee gave Langford a leadoff single. After Tromp threw out Langford trying to steаl second, Knizner flied out for the first out. After making an excellent throw-down selection, Luis Guillorme managed to tag Langford. But Lee wasn’t quite out of the woods yet, as he walked Leody Tavares before giving Semien a single. To maintain the score at 4-3, he returned and struck out Seager swinging.
In the eighth, Tyler Matzek assumed control and was soon in trouble. After Carter reached on an infield single, Garcia Һit a two-run drive, bringing the score to 6-3.
Atlanta had a chance to respond, but was once more unable to produce a significant Һit. Acuña Һit a single to open the scoring. It was the first Һit for the Braves since Tromp singled them home in the second inning. Next, Harris Һit a fly ball to right, which Garcia mishandled and dropped. Riley then reduced the lead to 6-4 with a slow roller through the right side for a single that scored Acuña. Olson struck out for the fourth time in the game with runners at the corners and no one out. Then, for out No. 2, Ozuna hopped out to second. Then, in order to eliminate the threаt, Bruce Bochy went back to his bullpen and used former Braves reliever Kirby Yates, who struck out Arcia.
In a scoreless ninth, Aaron Bummer struck out two, but Yates retired the side to end the game.
Atlanta wins the series despite the setback, but their six-game winning streak is over and they now stand at 14-6 on the season. The Miami Marlins visit Truist Park for a three-game series on Monday, marking the start of the Braves’ homestand.
