UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has challenged his abilities by facing off against Jamal Murray, the point guard for the NBA champion Denver Nuggets.
However, once they got onto the ground, these differences in height and size became irrelevant. Standing at 5’6″, Volkanovski usually faces opponents who are taller than him, but none are as large as Murray. Despite Murray towering at 6’4″ and weighing 215lbs, his stature is still overshadowed by NBA defenders who are often over seven feet tall and much heavier. Recently, Murray sought out Volkanovski to gain insights into striking and grappling techniques from the UFC’s pound-for-pound best fighter.
Soon after acquiring his new skills, the 26-year-old Canadian was eager to put them to the test and boldly proposed a challenge to Volkanovski: to attempt to submit him within 60 seconds. “I’m not going to let myself get submitted in just a minute,” Murray asserted. “If you try to submit me within that timeframe, my goal is simply to survive.” Volkanovski accepted the challenge with a smile, though he took a moment to clarify the rules of their grappling bout. Murray was open to Volkanovski going all out and attempting any submission technique except for leg locks.
