Shea Langeliers smashed three home runs, including a pivotal two-run shot in the ninth inning, propelling the Oakland Athletics to a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.
The 26-year-old, who had amassed 29 career big league homers prior to the game, launched solo shots in the second inning off Nathan Eovaldi and in the seventh inning against David Robertson. With Texas leading 3-2 in the ninth, Seth Brown drew a crucial walk with one out against José Leclerc (0-2), setting the stage for Langeliers’ heroics.
On the first pitch he saw, Langeliers drilled a fastball to left-center field for his fourth homer of the season, completing his first career three-homer game. Notably, he had previously hit two home runs on October 2, 2022, against Seattle and on August 23 last year against the Chicago White Sox. Langeliers evened the score at 1-1 with his first homer off Eovaldi’s splitter and then tied it at 2-2 with his second homer, a knuckle-split from Robertson, who was celebrating his 39th birthday.
Michael Kelly (1-0) delivered a flawless eighth inning, while Mason Miller closed out the game with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth, securing Oakland’s first save of the season. Texas took an early lead when Marcus Semien homered on the first pitch from Alex Wood, followed by Josh Smith’s RBI single off Wood in the sixth. However, Jonah Heim homered in the second inning and Evan Carter in the seventh against Mitch Spence, keeping Oakland within striking distance.
Wood exited the game after four innings due to a calf cramp. Meanwhile, Rangers’ All-Star shortstop Corey Seager received his second game off this season, having missed a significant portion of spring training due to sports hernia surgery in late January.
