Rangers look to end Astros’ success at Globe Life Field

Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran have suddenly found themselves playing more significant roles than initially anticipated for the Texas Rangers, who are set to commence a four-game series against the visiting Houston Astros on Friday.

This matchup marks the first encounter between the teams since Texas emerged victorious in last season’s American League Championship Series, clinching the series 4-3. Notably, all seven games in the series were won by the visiting team. The Rangers have faced challenges against their divisional rivals, particularly at Globe Life Field in Arlington, where they have struggled against the Astros. Houston has secured victory in eight consecutive games at the ballpark, including postseason matchups.

Smith and Duran, who previously served as role players for last season’s championship-winning team, are poised to take on more significant roles following an injury to All-Star third baseman Josh Jung. Jung suffered a fractured right wrist on Monday, prompting adjustments to his initial six-week recovery timeline.

After undergoing surgery, the timeline has been extended to eight to 10 weeks. “He underwent a successful surgery, and the damage was repaired,” stated Rangers general manager Chris Young. “While it’s not the most favorable news, we remain optimistic about his full recovery. We’re simply taking a more cautious approach with the timeline. Nonetheless, we anticipate his return at some point during this season.”

Smith, playing shortstop, drove in two runs while third baseman Duran showcased an impressive defensive performance in Texas’ 4-1 victory on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. “We’re going to rely on them,” emphasized Rangers manager Bruce Bochy. The AL All-Stars Suddenly Look a Lot Like the Texas Rangers - WSJ

“We faced similar situations last year with injuries, and it’s all about the ‘next man up’ mentality. Duran will be getting more opportunities at the plate; Smith has been swinging the bat effectively. They’re integral parts of this team. We adapt and move forward. One thing this team does well is to focus on the future rather than dwelling on the past. Forward focus is key.” In Friday’s series opener, Texas will entrust right-hander Cody Bradford (1-0, 3.60 ERA) to take the mound.

Bradford, aged 26, surrendered two runs on three hits across five innings in a convincing 11-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs last Saturday.

Bradford is 0-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three appearances (no starts) against the Astros in his career. Houston will counter with right-hander Hunter Brown (0-0, 0.00), who allowed one unearned run over four innings in a no-decision against the New York Yankees last Saturday. Brown, 25, has gone 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in three career starts versus Texas. The Astros begin the series after taking two of three against the Toronto Blue Jays, including an 8-0 win on Wednesday.
