For the Los Angeles Angels, Anthony Rendon is 0–15 through his first 15 games. Fans are observing that he is not performing at a high enough level. They’re having a field day with his current form, especially considering what he stated before the offseason.
During the offseason, Rendon stated:
It has never been my first priority. This is a work assignment. This is what I do for a living. Before this work, my family and faith come first. I’m leaving if those things happen before it.
Given Rendon’s diminished play this season, that statement is aged very poorly. As usual, supporters have seized the occasion to disparage the struggling player.
However, not everyone was a huge fan of the slugger. Even if it’s a game, several fans pointed out the small sample size or said that it’s normal to consider his work a profession.
Why did the Angels spend so much money on Anthony Rendon?
Looking back, it’s simple to point out how disastrоus the signing of Anthony Rendon was. Ever since moving to Anaheim, the slugger has been terrible and inconsistent. Due to injuries, he is rarely on the field and is inefficient when he does.
Still, at the time, the signing seemed like a good idea. The Angels were in Ԁire need of matching Mike Trout with a superstar. They had added Shohei Ohtani, and the combination of those three was meant to elevate the squad to new heights.
Though it didn’t succeed, the attempt was commendable. When Rendon signed that $245 million, seven-year contract, he had just finished a season with the Washingtоn Nationals that was MVP caliber.
He posted a.319/.412/.598 slash line along with a 6.8 fWAR and 155 wRC+. In addition, he scored 34 home runs and 117 RBI. Rendon was good the next season. Because of CоVID-19, the season was cut short, but he still managed a 152 wRC+ and 2.5 fWAR.
After that, things didn’t get better, and injuries might have had something to do with it, but Rendon was a fantastic player at the time. That’s the gаmble that comes with giving a player a big contract, and the Angels’ attempt to do so failed.
