In a rain-shortened game that lasted eight innings on Monday, the Atlanta Braves defeated the Chicago White Sox 9-0 thanks to a three-run home run by Austin Riley and five and a third scoreless innings pitched by Charlie Morton.
The 40-year-old Morton (1-0), who is the oldest big league starter this year, gave up three hits, walked two, and struck out six in his season debut, causing Chicago to lose four straight games. Riley’s home run against reliever Dominic Leone was the first pitch that was hit during a forty-four-minute rain delay. He had four RBIs at the end of the day.
Following the eighth, the game was again stopped and resumed a little while later.
Atlanta is off to a 3-1 start on its season-opening road trip, with at least one hit from each of its nine starts.
Starter Chris Flexen (0-1) of Chicago gave up six hits, three walks, and four runs in 4 1/3 innings in his first game with the team.
In the third, Travis D’Arnaud opened the scoring with a run-in after Ronald Acuña Jr. fielded a fielder’s choice, and Orlando Arcia extended the lead with a two-run double an inning later.
In the first three innings, Morton allowed a hit, but he calmed down and got the last 11 batters to fly out before departing with two outs in the sixth. The shutout was completed by relievers Tyler Matzek and Dylan Lee.
The White Sox, who have not begun 0-4 since 2015, were led by Yoán Moncada with two hits.
