The 24-year-old Jarred Kelenic, who was acquired by Atlanta from the Seattle Mariners in a December 2023 trade, is a major factor in the Braves’ 2-0 record despite their limited MLB action.
Following his 1-2 performance in Friday’s season-opening victory over the Phillies, Kelenic took the field on Saturday, going 3-4 with a walk and producing a superb defensive play.
The pleasant surprise of Kelenic’s good start further enhances the greatest offensive in baseball for a Braves team that boasts the deepest lineup in the league.
Whatever transpires in the series finale tomorrow afternoon, Kelenic’s first weekend in Philadelphia should be viewed as a huge success for a guy who came into the season as the team’s biggest offensive unknown.
This is not necessarily a criticism on Kelenic; rather, it is just another illustration of how excellent the Braves offense is, and how much better it can be with Kelenic continuing to contribute consistently.
While it is evident that Kelenic won’t be able to maintain his.667 average throughout the season, if he can become a player who gets on base each and every night, he will be a valuable addition to the Braves, who are in need of a feisty hitter to round out their order.
In 2023, Kelenic had the best season of his major league career. He batted below the hated Mendoza line in 2021 and 2022, but in 2023 he put up a strong.253 average with 11 home runs and 49 RBI. With an Atlanta squad that is certain to rank among the best in baseball once again, Kelenic appears to be in position for the best season of his short career.
Although it will take time to see whether the Braves organization gains anything overall from the Kelenic trade, he has already shown his value in his first weekend on the team.
