Much excitement accompanied Shohei Ohtani’s arrival in Korea.
The MLB great, who was born in Japan, and his new colleagues, as well as his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, arrived in South Korea on Friday in preparation for next week’s season opening for the Los Angeles Dodgers versus the Padres.
Although Ohtani’s marriage was announced on February 29th, it was only this week that his relationship with Tanaka was made public.
“She is a Japanese woman, and I don’t really feel comfortable talking about when I was married, the actual day and whatnot,” Ohtani, who is reticent about his personal life, said at the time through interpreter Ippei Mizuhara.
“However, she is just your average Japanese lady.”
The Asia Basket website lists Japanese basketball player Tanaka as a 5-foot-11 power forward/center.
During their visit to South Korea, Ohtani and Tanaka were reportedly greeted by a large number of fans dressed as Dodgers.
He smiled and waved to the crowd as a subtle way to greet them. Thanks to Ohtani’s high-profile offseason signing a 10-year, $700 million contract, the Dodgers are among the favorites to win the World Series this coming season.
On Wednesday at 6:05 a.m. ET, they will take on the Padres in the opening game of the year at Gocheok SkyDome.
