Brewers trade left-handed pitcher Ethan Small to Giants in exchange for cash

After the Milwaukee Brewers designated left-hander Ethan Small for assignment last week, the San Francisco Giants acquired him from Milwaukee for cash on Monday.

With two starts and four appearances in the major leagues, Small, who will turn 27 on February 14, has an earned run average of 8.71. In two appearances with Milwaukee last season, he allowed five runs over four innings and recorded one save.

In 2023, Small was mostly used as a reliever for the Brewers’ Triple-A Nashville affiliate, making 36 of his 38 appearances in that role. Over 51 innings in Nashville, he struck out 61 batters and walked 24. His ERA was 3.18, and he recorded three saves.

In Thursday’s transaction that sent 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles, the Brewers acquired infielder Joey Ortiz and left-handed pitcher DL Hall. To make room on their 40-man roster, the Brewers designated Small for assignment.

Bobby Witt Jr. finally speaks out about the biggest deal the Royals have ever signed.

Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. became the most paid athlete in Kansas City Royals history after agreeing to a hefty 11-year, $288 million agreement with the team.

By posting a message on Monday to social media, Witt Jr. thanked the Royals for believing in him and promised to do all it takes to help Kansas City win baseball again. He was especially appreciative of the support of the Sherman family and the Royals’ management office. “Let’s do it!”

The value of the transaction might be increased even further by taking advantage of the different opt-outs and the Royals option.

According to sources, Witt will have the option to opt out after the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth years according to the deal. After the eleventh season, there is a club option that could add three more years and $89 million to the contract, bringing the total to fourteen years and $377 million.

Witt had another strong season in 2023 after a productive debut year in 2022 with the Kansas City Chiefs. His line was.276/.319/.495/.813. The Royals infielder led the league with eleven triples, thirty home runs, fifty-nine stolen bases, and twenty-eight doubles. Witt became a household nаme and was even considered for most valuable player honors.Still, this is a 23-year-old player. His biggest season is projected to occur in 2024, and he’s still getting better. At the same time, the Royals have taken steps to improve their roster. Despite playing in the uninspiring AL Central, Kansas City has a legitimate shot of making the playoffs.

Adam Frasier, a former All-Star, was signed to a one-year deal by the Royals last week. The Kansas City Royals are banking on him to regain his 2021 form so that he can shield Witt from the strike zone.
