When Derek Jeter spoke candidly about his childhood with Barack Obama, the president said, ‘You have the dream but you can’t really see it’

In the Roosevelt Room of the White House, former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and then-President Barack Obama had an emotional chat. They talked about everything from their youth to retirement and beyond.

The iconic Yankees player also thought about what he would tell his younger self and came up with the advice “to continue to work.” His 2016 comments are as follows, as reported by The Players Tribune:

“Because at that age, you have the dream, but you can’t really see it,” remarked Jeter.

Additionally, Obama offered some words of wisdom to his younger self, telling him to quit “goofing off” and start “hitting the books” instead.

“I can’t sаy at 10 years old I was exceptional,” remarked the president. “I bet you were one of those kids that was like always the best athlete even at 10, and everybody was like, ‘Oh, Derek…’ All the little girls had crushed on you and all of that.”

Jeter responded with a laugh and acknowledged that this was incorrect. Obama proceeded:

“I was living in Hawaii at the time and there weren’t that many black kids there, so part of what I was trying to figure out at 10 years old was, you know, what kind of role models do I have for myself because my father wasn’t with us.”

In light of Derek Jeter’s obvious decline in performance during his last years with the Yankees, Obama made light of the situation:

You were quite elderly for a baseball player. It is what it is. Come on, dude. We witnessed your attempt to evade those bases. The Jeter family includes a son, three daughters, and Hannah.

Derek Jeter went from being a famous baseball player to a devoted family man after retiring. He built an empire of businesses throughout the years. In 2023, when speaking with The Messenger, Jeter stated:

Taking care of my loved ones is my first concern. My top priority has shifted when my oldest son turned five. People will constantly tell you, “Just wait till you have a family of your own.”

Former Sports Illustrated model Hannah Davis Jeter was Jeter’s wife in 2016. The five-time World Series winner and Hannah already have four children—a son, three daughters, and a granddaughter—and the two joked with the Mail about their lack of plans to expand their family.
