In a sensational transaction, the Orioles got Corbin Burnes from the Brewers

According to Jon Heyman of The Post, on Thursday night, the Brewers and the Orioles finalized a massive transaction that sent Corbin Burnes to Baltimore.

Joey Ortiz, a left-handed pitcher, and a competitive balance round A draft pick will be sent to the Brewers in return, according to Joel Sherman of The Post.

Burnes, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft out of Saint Mary’s College of California, will be returning to Major League Baseball after spending six years there.

The right-hander has been on fire over the past three years, making the All-Star team three times and taking home the National League Cy Young trophy in 2021 with a 2.43 ERA in 28 starts.

In 709 1/3 innings pitched, he has 870 strikeouts and a 3.26 earned run average.

Brewers trade former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes to Baltimore Orioles

Milwaukee is saying goodbye to Corbin Burnes.

Burnes has been traded from the Brewers to the Orioles by Baltimore. The Orioles confirmed the rumors on Thursday with an announcement. A lot of people were wondering if Burnes would be playing for a new team in 2024 before the deal finally happened. The Brewers will get left-handed pitcher D.L. Hall and shortstop Joey Ortiz from the Orioles. Ortiz was regarded as the sixth-best prоspect in Baltimore and is currently 63rd in baseball by MLB.com. With nine games under his MLB belt, 25-year-old Hall was a first-round pick in 2021. The 2017 Major League Baseball draft will also include the Brewers with a Competitive Balance Round A selection (34th overall).

The trade comes just one day after the Orioles franchise sale was announced. On Wednesday, it was rumored that the Orioles would be sold by the Angelos family to a group comprising Cal Ripken Jr., private equity tycoon Mike Arougheti, and billionaires David Rubenstein and Mike Arougheti. From 1993 until recently, the franchise was held by a group headed by Peter Angelos.

An era in Milwaukee comes to a close with Burnes’ departure. After six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, Burnes retired as a three-time All-Star and 2021 National League Cy Young winner. He was a part of the Milwaukee Bucks for six seasons, during which time the team returned to the playoffs after a six-year absence and advanced to the postseason five times.

With a 2.43 ERA in 2021—the best in the league—Burnes became the team’s ace and won the Cy Young Award. Not only did he win the Cy Young Award in 2022, but he has been a top ten finisher in the vote for the award for the past two seasons.

Burnes uses a five-pitch arsenal—a cutter, slider, changeup, and sinker—to create swinging strikes, with the cutter reaching high 90s. He still has the stuff to be the 29-year-old starting pitcher for a Baltimore team that may contend. After the shоcking November departure of manager Craig Counsell to the rival Chicago Cubs, the Milwaukee Brewers traded for Burnes. Burnes finished 2023 with a 3.39 ERA, an MLB-best 1.069 WҺIP, 200 strikeouts, and 66 walks in 193 2/3 innings thrown. They were both crucial to Milwaukee’s postseason runs, but each of those runs ended in disappointment as the Brewers only made it to the National League Championship Series once. The eventual National League champion Arizona Diamondbacks swept the Brewers in the 2023 wild-card round.

By acquiring first baseman Rhys Hoskins in January, the Brewers sent a message that they intend to remain competitive. But Burnes’ arbitration eligibility is coming to an end and he will be a free agent after 2024. The Brewers decided to trade their star pitcher instead of risking losing him for nothing in the upcoming summer since they did not have a long-term contract in place.
