An ex-Yankee thinks Anthony Volpe is more mature and prepared for the big leagues than Derek Jeter is at his age

The 2023 New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe impressed one team legend with his maturity and tenacity.

In Willie Randolph’s opinion, Volpe had an impressive debut season and may have shown that he was more versatile and experienced than Derek Jeter, a legend of the Yankees.

“In my opinion, Anthony possesses a higher level of polish compared to Jeter during that period.”

Anthony Volpe Deserves Much Acclaim for His Gold Glove Winning Season

During his 2023 season, Volpe, a 22-year-old shortstop, won the Gold Glove award with 186 putouts, 357 assists, and only 17 errors.

With his victory, he solidified Randolph’s claim as the only Yankees shortstop to do so since Jeter. Is Volpe, at 22 years old, a better player than Jeter?

Was 22-year-old Derek Jeter as good of a defensive player as Volpe?

In his second season with the Yankees, Jeter excelled at shortstop. Despite not winning the Gold Glove like Volpe, he was second to Volpe in assists with 444 and had 244 putouts, while he also made 22 mistakes.

What Distinguishes Jeter From Volpe Is His оffensive Performance And His Run To The Championship

In this early stage of his career, Jeter surpasses Volpe at the plate. In 582 at-bats, Jeter showed uber-efficiency with a slash line of.314/.370/.430. He had six triples that season and was fourteenth in the American League in batting average.

With a batting line of.209/.283/.383, Volpe was not particularly efficient last season, but he did lead the league in stolen bases with 14.

The 1996 World Series victory might be the thing that sets Jeter different. He was the engine that kept the Yankees’ offense going, and while his 10 home runs weren’t exactly ground-breаking, his 78 RBIs and other stats make for compelling discussion. Randolph, who sees great things in Volpe’s future, would be the first to tell you if Volpe can keep up his current level of play and be compared to Jeter in the future.
