Shane Greene and Jonathan Holder Sign Minor League Contracts with the Rangers

The Texas Rangers have taken steps to fortify their pitching options by signing right-handed pitchers Shane Greene and Jonathan Holder to minor league contracts, both of which include invitations to the big league camp for the upcoming spring training. This move follows the team’s previous signing of right-hander Austin Pruitt to a similar deal.

Shane Greene, 35, has established himself as a reliable high-leverage bullpen arm during his tenure with the Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves. From 2017 to 2020, he posted a combined 3.25 ERA while accumulating 64 saves and 35 holds. However, he encountered struggles last season, recording a 7.23 ERA in 28 innings. He has had limited opportunities to pitch over the past two years but showed promise with three solid innings after signing a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs last year. The Rangers are taking a calculated risk by signing Greene, hoping he can rediscover his previous form and provide stability to their bullpen.

Jonathan Holder, 30, enjoyed a productive period with the New York Yankees from 2017 to 2018, showcasing a 3.42 ERA and displaying good command. However, shoulder issues have plagued him in recent years, resulting in limited playing time. Between 2021 and 2022, he only pitched 23 innings across the minors and majors. Last season, Holder signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels and managed to pitch 66 2/3 innings, albeit with a higher ERA and walk rate than desired.

The Rangers’ decision to sign these two non-roster veterans is understandable given the uncertainty surrounding their bullpen and starting rotation. Injuries to key pitchers Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom, along with concerns about their television broadcast situation, have contributed to a quieter offseason in terms of marquee signings for the team. It is likely that the remaining resources of the offseason will be focused on bolstering the rotation. Texas General Manager Chris Young is hopeful that these cost-effective signings will provide much-needed relief for the team in the upcoming season.
