Despite being one of the few clubs without a free agent signing, the New York Yankees have strengthened their roster with the addition of several talented players. Juan Soto, a Dominican celebrity, is unquestionably the largest. Despite the Bronx Squad’s generally fruitless offseason, the arrival of Soto after so many turns is a huge victory. Victory in this case comes at a heavy price for the Bombers, but every cloud has a silver lining.
Maybe the Yankees have always lacked a player like the Childish Bambino. A left-handed slugger with the ability to guarantee big hits. But can the Yankees get the most out of their one year of guaranteed service? Could Soto’s arrival, with his enormous salary, ruin the rest of the Bombers’ offseason?
Juan Soto received a salary of $24 million from the San Diego Padres in 2023. Soto delivered on his promise of a 35-home run season. The New York Yankees got Soto in a trade because they were terrifieԀ of his 2024 salary. The Bombers are reportedly going to pay Soto close to $33 million, which is more over $30 million.
As of last season, the Yankees’ payroll was second to none. Payroll in the Bronx was thus already feeling the pinch. However, the pressure has been slightly amplified since Soto’s arrival. Maybe it’s because of that that their offseason business has come to a standstill.
Despite not spending a ton of money thus far, the Yankees turned down a $300 million offer from Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The team is still not subject to taxes at this time; the issue is the offseason of 2024. Soto is expected to receive a large contract when he becomes a free agent, especially after turning down a $440 million offer from the Washingtоn Nationals.
In order to make a serious offer for Soto, the Yankees will need to start controlling their budget this winter. The salaries they’re already paying are a major factor.
At least until 2027, the Yankees will pay Gerrit Cole $36 million, Giancarlo Stanton $32 million, Carlos Rodon $27 million, and Aaron Judge $40 million. They will need to make room in their payroll for Soto’s salary and a possible $30 million. That may explain the Bombers’ reluctance to sign major free agents this year.
To what extent Soto makes good use of his massive contract while playing for the Pinstripes remаins to be seen. The Yankees and Soto are both focused on winning now, so it’s possible that there will be a lot of excitement at Yankee Stadium this season.
