Overcoming pitching staff injuries was a challenge for the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2023 season, leading them to utilize multiple bullpen games. One notable contribution came from Adam Kolarek in June, when he faced the Philadelphia Phillies.
Kolarek got his chance with the Dodgers in the series finale against the Phillies on June 11. He was called up after Andre Jackson was optioned. Prior to his promotion, Kolarek had an impressive 2.18 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 21 relief appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Due to an injury setback to Julio Urías, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts decided to go with a bullpen game, giving Kolarek his first opportunity of the season. Unfortunately, he surrendered a two-out, two-run single to Bryson Stott, resulting in a 7-3 loss for the Dodgers. Three days later, Kolarek was designated for assignment. He remained with OKC until the trade deadline, when he and Phil Bickford were traded to the New York Mets for cash considerations.
With the Mets, Kolarek made four appearances and pitched a combined 4.2 scoreless innings, striking out five batters. However, on August 27, he was once again designated for assignment and subsequently elected free agency. Kolarek then signed with the Atlanta Braves and spent the remainder of the season playing for the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers.
During the 2023 season, Kolarek had limited opportunities at the MLB level, but he found success with Oklahoma City. From April 1 to June 30, he recorded a 2.40 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 4.22 FIP in 30 innings pitched for the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate. Although he struggled with control, issuing 17 walks compared to 26 strikeouts, Kolarek did not allow any earned runs or home runs throughout that 33-game stretch.
Looking ahead to 2024, Kolarek signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Los Angeles Angels. With only 33.2 innings at the Major League level since the start of the 2021 season, he presents a low-risk option for a bullpen in need of a left-handed specialist. Despite his potential, Kolarek’s performance against right-handed hitters remains unpredictable.
As the 2024 season begins, Kolarek, who will be 35 years old, will have an opportunity to carve out a role on a youthful Angels roster.
