Kris Medlen, the beloved former Atlanta Braves star, recently sat down to discuss life after baseball, including his involvement with the Legacy Sports Complex, and his thoughts on young pitcher Spencer Strider.
Medlen, who played a pivotal role in the Braves’ success in 2012 and 2013, reflected on his time dominating at the highest level. Known for his tenacity and desire to take the ball in any situation, Medlen expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had and the chance to prove himself. He discussed the challenges he faced as an undersized player in high school, which fueled his determination to excel. Medlen credited being overlooked as a driving force behind his success.
During the conversation, the topic shifted to Spencer Strider, a young pitcher who has been making waves in the Braves organization. Medlen offered his insights on Strider’s lack of a consistent third pitch. While acknowledging the benefits of having a third pitch, Medlen questioned whether it was necessary for Strider, who possesses an elite fastball and slider. He suggested that external influences, such as media or coaching staff, may have led Strider to force the development of a change-up. Medlen also shared his thoughts on Strider’s performance throughout the season, pointing out some potential reasons for his occasional lulls.
In addition to his baseball endeavors, Medlen has ventured into the business side of sports. He recently joined the ownership group of the Legacy Sports Complex, along with former Braves pitcher Jonny Venters. The Legacy Sports Complex, with its current 15,000 sq. ft. facility in Suwanee, GA, offers a variety of athletic programs. They are preparing to open a second location in Lawrenceville, GA, later in January.
Medlen and Venters bring their wealth of experience and passion for the sport to enhance the baseball program at Legacy Sports Complex, which already includes other former professional athletes from various sports, such as MMA and football.
