Gio Urshela, an infielder available as a free agent this winter, may find a suitor among his old clubs. The Athletic’s Will Sammon reports that third basemen are being pursued by the Mets and the Yankees.
The teams based in New York might not be the sole ones interested, according to Sammon. With the signing of Isiah Kiner-Falefa, the Toronto Blue Jays may no longer be interested in adding Gio Urshela to their roster. Aside from this, the infield needs some work for the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, and Chicago Cubs.
Due to his ιnjury-plagued 2023 season, in which he appeared in just 62 games for the Los Angeles Angels, Urshela’s market interest has strangely gone unnoticed. He was sidelined for the rest of the season after breаking his pelvis in June.
In addition, he has been slashing offensively, which has reduced his production.24 RBIs, two home runs, and a.329 batting average.
His tenure with the Bronx Bombers has been enjoyable on occasion, and 2019 was a very productive year for him. While playing for the Yankees, Urshela batted 292 times, Һit 41 home runs, had 153 RBIs, and scored 139 runs.
Among the few infielders available this offseason are Tim Anderson, Adam Frazier, Eduardo Escobar, Matt Chapman, Urshela, Whit Merrifield, and Tim Anderson. The future of Urshela’s market is uncertain because a signing could be on the horizon.
The ‘interesting teams’ that Gio Urshela can join
The Mets’ switch-hitter third baseman Ronny Mauricio tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during winter ball, which is supposedly one reason they’re interested in Gio Urshela. The remaining backups are Joey Wendle, Brett Baty, and Mark Vientos. Neither Baty nor Vientos have had much success in the major leagues, whether they’re playing on dirt or in the batter’s box. In 2024, with Urshela on the team, third base will be well-stocked.
But the Yankees’ interest in bringing him on board is less obvious. With Oswaldo Cabrera and veteran DJ LeMahieu as backups, they already have a solid third base rotation. In addition to this, the other infield spots are very much locked in with Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Gleyber Torres at second base, and Anthony Rizzo at first base.
