Tyler Glasnow: ‘It’s a no-brainer’ to sign a Dodgers contract extension

Dodgers Secure a Frontline Ace: Tyler Glasnow Joins the Roster

In their pursuit of a top-tier starting pitcher, the Los Angeles Dodgers achieved their goal by striking a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays for the talented Tyler Glasnow. The trade also brought Manuel Margot to L.A., with Ryan Pepiot and Jonny DeLuca heading to Tampa Bay as part of the exchange.

However, the completion of the trade hinged on Glasnow signing a contract extension with the Dodgers, as he was set to hit free agency after the 2024 season. Ultimately, the team successfully secured his services for the next five years, sealing the deal with a contract worth a total of $136.5 million.

Reflecting on the trade and extension, Glasnow commented, “In order to be traded to the Dodgers, I knew I probably needed to agree to something. It was somewhat of a package deal. I had a sense of what was going on, but I let my agent handle most of it. It’s a place I’ve wanted to be my whole life.”

He further expressed his excitement about joining the Dodgers, highlighting the team’s pursuit of him and the opportunity to play in his hometown. “There was a short list of teams I wanted to go to, and the Dodgers were on it. They were very enthusiastic about acquiring me, and I truly appreciated their high regard for me. Being able to play at home with all my family there made it a no-brainer for me. I’m thrilled that it happened and we got it done.”

Glasnow compared the Dodgers to his former team, the Rays, and conducted thorough research on the organization before committing to the contract extension. “My agent and I had a number in mind, and he knew that I wanted to be with the Dodgers,” Glasnow explained.

“The negotiation process was primarily handled between the front office and my agent. After the deal was finalized, I had the opportunity to speak with many of the front office personnel. Overall, my agent has a good relationship with everyone there, so it was mostly their intermediary work that led to the agreement.”

As he delved into his observations, Glasnow found similarities between the Dodgers and the Rays. “As we talked, I realized that it has a similar atmosphere to the Rays. The only difference is that the Dodgers have more financial resources. But it has the same welcoming vibe. Everyone is fantastic, and winning is crucial without sacrificing individuality.”

He added, “Everyone seems really cool, and I believe that culture is highly valued by the organization. Speaking to teammates and gathering information about the Dodgers, I consistently heard about the organization’s excellence, the quality of people involved, and the top-notch players. It was a perfect fit. I love it.”

Glasnow emphasized that his priority was finding a comfortable environment rather than maximizing his earnings as a free agent. “For me, it has never been solely about making as much money as possible,” he explained.

“More importantly, it’s about being in a place where I want to be and enjoying my life both on and off the field. I was fortunate to have that experience with the Rays, and it appears to be the same with the Dodgers. It’s a relaxed and supportive atmosphere where everyone comes to do their job. And outside of the field, I can unwind and enjoy life. Los Angeles was truly where I wanted to be, especially with my family there.”

Glasnow acknowledged that there are different perspectives on the matter, but he felt content with the financial terms of the contract. “There could be potential downsides to not holding out for more, but there could also be potential upsides. Personally, the money offered was more than enough for me. I’m extremely pleased with the financial aspect, and I’m genuinely thrilled to be where I am.”

He concluded, “I was never fixated on trying to maximize my earnings. It worked out exceptionally well for me.”
