Another free agent splash is still possible for the Dodgers.
In addition to spending over a billiоn dollars on Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow so far this month, the Dodgers’ executive office is reportedly keeping an eye on the free agency outfielder Teoscar Hernandez:
The Dodgers were rumored to be interested in signing Hernandez, 31, throughout the offseason. That was before the club’s pitching boom brought them two starting pitchers—Yamamoto and Glasnow—and a third—the versatile Shohei Ohtani, who won’t be ready to throw until 2025.
The Dodgers still appear to be open to pursuing other free agents, even after making those investments.
Hernandez took the pitch. He had a career year in 2023 with 258 hits, 26 HR, and 93 RBIs while playing for Seattle. In a prior transaction involving pitcher Erik Swanson and prоspect Adam Macko, the Mariners had acquired Hernandez from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Hernandez made an appearance in 162 of the Mariners’ games, but his OPS+ dropped to 106, his worst since 2019. He tied for second place in the American League with 211 strikeouts, just behind teammate Eugenio Suarez.
During his eight-year MLB career, Hernandez has split time between the Astros, Blue Jays, and Mariners, compiling a 119 OPS+. While he was in Toronto, he won not one but two Silver Slugger medals.
Hernandez became a free agent in November when the Mariners passed on a qualifying offer of one year and $20.325 million.
With Jason Heyward, Manuel Margot, James Outman, and Chris Taylor in the outfield, Hernandez would be a great addition to the Dodgers’ rotation, though he may be seeking a greater chance than what they’re offering. His track record shows that he is more effective when facing left-handed pitchers than right-handed ones. But Margot has, too, so Hernandez may be considered a luxury by the Dodgers.
Throughout his career, Hernandez has suited up at every outfield position. The Mariners put him on the designated hitter and right fielder’s roster for 2023.
For the purpose of calculating the luxury tax, the Dodgers’ salary is anticipated to be between $286 and $289 million. Teams are subject to a 110 percent tax on any amount over the $297 million tax threshold.
