The Los Angeles Dodgers have secured the services of Tyler Glasnow through a contract extension following a four-player trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. In a significant move, Glasnow is set to earn a substantial $136.5 million over the next five seasons, with a $25 million salary earmarked for 2024. To strategically manage their competitive balance tax (CBT) payroll, the Dodgers reportedly converted $10 million of Glasnow’s 2024 salary into a signing bonus.
Additionally, the Dodgers have included a club option for the 2029 season in Glasnow’s contract, valued at $30 million. In the event that the option is declined, there is speculation that Glasnow holds a player option of $20 million that he could potentially exercise.
Notably, as part of the contract extension, Glasnow has committed to donating 1% of his annual salary to the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, parallel to the arrangement made with Shohei Ohtani in his historic contract with the team. Ohtani reportedly played a role in recruiting Glasnow while the Dodgers were finalizing their trade with the Rays. Moreover, Ohtani’s deferred salary has contributed to the Dodgers’ aggressive offseason, which has seen the acquisition of Glasnow and the potential signing of Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
When in optimal health, Glasnow is considered one of the premier starting pitchers in Major League Baseball, providing the Dodgers with another ace alongside the returning Walker Buehler, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. In his recent season with the Rays, Glasnow amassed a 10-7 record with an impressive 3.53 ERA, 2.91 FIP, 1.08 WHIP, and 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings across 21 starts. Although he initially faced a setback due to a left oblique strain, Glasnow demonstrated resilience by remaining on the field for the majority of the campaign.
Since joining the Rays in 2018, Glasnow has established himself as a dominant force on the mound. Among starting pitchers during this period, he ranks fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (12.19) and batting average against (.195), while also sharing seventh place in FIP (3.10). These statistics underline Glasnow’s exceptional talent and further bolster the Dodgers’ pitching rotation.
