The Los Angeles Dodgers have maintained contact with the best starting pitchers on the market, including Tyler Glasnow of the Tampa Bay Rays, in an attempt to strengthen their starting rotation.
The Rays made the ace available because Glasnow, who makes $25 million a year, will be a free agent after the 2024 season. Although he has had trouble staying on the field for the majority of his career, Glasnow is one of the MLB’s best pitchers when healthy.
Glasnow was a sought-after target on the market and has a strong connection to the Dodgers.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, after negotiations heated up, the Dodgers acquired Glasnow and Manuel Margot for Ryan Pepiot and Jonny DeLuca, conditioned on the right-hander signing an extension with the team:
Only twice since making his Major League Baseball debut in 2016 has Trevor Lindsey managed to toss 100 innings in a season: once in 2018 with 111.2 and again in 2023 with 120.
Due to a left oblique strain he suffered during spring training, the 30-year-old did not make his 2023 debut until May 27. Nevertheless, he was able to maintain his health for the remainder of the season. With 21 starts, 12.2 strikeouts per nine, a 2.91 FIP, a 1.08 WHIP, and a 3.53 ERA, Glasnow finished 2023 with a 10-7 record.
The Dodgers gain a true impact arm in Glasnow, who rises to the top of the rotation right away. The Dodgers need innings from their rotation in the regular season, but maintaining Glasnow’s health for October starts should be the main priority.
Margot, meanwhile, provides the Dodgers with the right-handed bat and outfielder they were lacking. Margot just finished a season with a 93 wRC+ and a.264/.310/.376 line of play.
In his career, he has a 90 wRC+, 9.6 WAR, and a.255/.309/.385 batting line. With a career wRC+ of 109, Margot has performed better against left-handed pitching than Jason Heyward, whom he is likely to platoon with as the starter.
Margot has also done better on the road in 2023, slugging.295/337/435 away from Tropicana Field, where he slugged.242/.297/.314.
The Dodgers acquired Ryan Pepiot, and Jonny DeLuca Pepiot was a disappointment in his Major League debut in 2022. He suffered an injury at the beginning of 2023, but he bounced back well.
The 26-year-old struck out almost 24% of batters and walked 3.1% in 42 innings pitched, recording a 2.14 ERA and 4.18 FIP.
In his 24 games since making his Major League Baseball debut in 2023, DeLuca hit.262/.311/.429 with a 102 wRC+. The Dodgers most likely did not have the 25-year-old in their long-term plans.
