On Monday afternoon, the Los Angeles Dodgers revealed that Shohei Ohtani had signed a 10-year, $700 million contract, officially ending the player’s career.
The Los Angeles Angels released a statement saying, “Shohei Ohtani is a generational player and it was an honor to watch him make history throughout the six seasons he spent in an Angels uniform.”
“We consider ourselves incredibly privileged to have witnessed him change the boundaries of our sport for Angels fans. We are appreciative of Shohei’s numerous contributions to both the baseball community and our team. We hope the best for him as he embarks on his next professional chapter.
Throughout his first six seasons in the major leagues, Ohtani was a member of the Angels, a team that was never very competitive.
Individually, those six years were full with achievements, including two unanimous MVP awards, Silver Sluggers, and the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Ohtani made MLB history by becoming the first player to win successive MVP Awards in a straight-up manner.
Throughout his Angels career, he hit.274/.366/.556 with 171 home runs and 437 RBI. Ohtani had a 38-19 record while starting 86 games, a 3.01 ERA, and 608 strikeouts in 481.2 innings pitched.
The Angels were reportedly among the finalists in Ohtani’s free agency process, despite their current troubles. Despite the general consensus that the Toronto Blue Jays made a significant push, several reports indicate he was close to choosing between the Dodgers and the Angels.
In the end, Ohtani signed the largest contract in the history of professional sports, a record-setting deal with the Dodgers. However, Ohtani’s contract has a sizable deferred salary since he will only be paid $2 million a year for the duration of it.
