By sending former first-round pick Trey Sweeney to the New York Yankees this week in exchange for Victor González and Jorbit Vivas, the Los Angeles Dodgers were able to break a standoff on their 40-man roster.
The Dodgers added Vivas to their 40-man roster in order to shield him from the 2021 Rule 5 Draft. González, meanwhile, used to be a vital component of their bullpen.
During the 2020 season, he made his major league debut, going 3-0 in 15 appearances (one start) with a 1.33 ERA and 0.74 WHIP. González performed well enough to play a significant part in the Dodgers’ World Series run, but he had trouble in the following seasons.
González expressed gratitude to the Dodgers organization and fans for his time in Los Angeles after being traded to the Yankees.
Furthermore, among left-handed relief pitchers, Ryan Yarbrough probably would have been better than González if he had been moved into that role instead of Caleb Ferguson and Alex Vesia.
Josh Hader is reportedly a free agent that the Dodgers are interested in signing.
Victor González’s Dodgers statsDuring his Dodgers tenure, González was 9-4 with a 3.22 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and one save in 93 games (three starts).
Following a breakout season in 2020, González played in 44 games in 2021, the most in his career, but his performance declined to the tune of a 3.57 ERA, 4.27 FIP, and 1.44 WHIP.
González only made 13 appearances in the Minor Leagues in 2022 due to left elbow issues that finally required surgery. This past season, he spent several stints with the Dodgers but was never consistent, ultimately finishing 3-3 with a 4.01 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.
