According to Jon Heyman on Twitter, the San Francisco Giants and Jung Hoo Lee of the KBO have agreed to a six-year contract worth $113 million. The 25-year-old centerfielder Lee is well-known for his contact hitting. At the age of eighteen, he was the 2017 KBO Rookie of the Year winner. Despite his lack of patience and power at the plate, he plays fast and plays excellent defense. With a career slash line of.340/.407/.491, Lee has been very successful in the KBO. In his last five seasons, he has also shown a higher walk-to-strikeout ratio.
This is a far bigger deal than anyone could have imagined. According to early estimates, Lee would get an average yearly value for a shorter period of three to five years that would be in the low teens. The player benefits greatly from having secured $19 million annually for six years, with the option to opt out after four.
Similar to Shohei Ohtani’s contract, there might be other financial agreements that have an effect on the deal’s total value. But right now, it seems like the Giants are making a big investment.
