The largest contract in professional sports history, worth $700 million over ten years, is being inked by Shohei Ohtani with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ohtani chose the Dodgers over the other finalists, the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, and Toronto Blue Jays, when he revealed his free agency decision on Instagram.
When Ohtani signed a 12-year, $426.5 million contract extension in March 2019, he broke the previous record held by former Angels colleague Mike Trout in both MLB and North American sports. With the $674 million he collected from FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi held the record for most sports earnings ever.
Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, stated, “This is a unique, historic contract for a unique, historic player.” “Shohei is ecstatic to be joining the Dodgers team. He is eager to get started on this collaboration and designed his contract to show that both parties are genuinely committed to long-term success.
“Shohei and I would like to express our gratitude to all the organizations that showed interest in and regard for us, especially the amazing people we became even closer to during this process. We would like to thank the fans, media, and industry for their tremendous interest in this process, as well as for their enthusiasm and thoughtfulness throughout.
The historic deal sent shockwaves across the sports industry and has sparked a craze for brand-new Ohtani gear and Dodgers clothes.
A few t-shirts are offered by authorized MLB partners; the league does not sell them.
How to get a Dodgers shirt for OhtaniShohei Ohtani Dodgers jersey buyers will have to wait until the signing is formally announced. To finalize the contract, Ohtani must take a medical, and the Dodgers must make room on their 40-man roster.
This also holds true for Joe Kelly, who consented to re-sign for the 2024 campaign; however, his contract is still subject to a formal, physical announcement from the team.
There will be Dodgers jerseys featuring Ohtani available at MLBshop.com, Fanatics, Nike, and other stores. Ohtani is most likely going to stick with the Dodgers and wear No. 17.
