Mike Trout, Patrick Mahomes, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Shohei Ohtani; Five of the best athletes in the world, each with a storied history of incredible team victories.
Well-paid as well.
Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, cashing in on his success. It’s very likely the biggest agreement in the four major North American sports’ combined history.
Ohtani becomes the latest member of a select group of athletes who have achieved financial success in tandem with their incredible on-field feats. A closer look at a few of the most paid athletes is provided here.
Shohei Ohtani
Ohtani’s new contract with the Dodgers is a testament to his exceptional worth and distinctive skill set. He is practically two great baseball players in one body.
This year, the two-way sensation won the AL MVP award unanimously for the second time. For the Los Angeles Angels, he batted.304 with 44 home runs, 95 RBIs, and 20 steals. In 23 career starts, the right-hander finished 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA.
His average salary of $70 million almost triple what he made with the Angels, which was about $42.3 million. It also surpasses Oakland’s and Baltimore’s combined payrolls for this year.
Lionel Messi
Similar to Ohtani, Messi’s deal reflects both his on-and off-field worth to his side.
When Messi, 36, revealed in June that he intended to join Inter Miami, Major League Soccer received a significant boost. In October, he captured the men’s Ballon d’Or, which is awarded to the best player in soccer each year, for a record-tying eighth time.
Messi’s two and a half-year contract with Inter Miami is worth between $125 million and $150 million in cash only. Messi will receive between $50 million and $60 million a year from the team.
Cristiano Ronaldo
After criticizing manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners in a TV interview, Ronaldo’s stellar career at Manchester United came to an abrupt end.
It didn’t take him long to sign a lucrative new contract, even if it put him far from the limelight of elite European soccer. Ronaldo was signed by the Saudi Arabian team Al Nassr a year ago, with a deal that expires in June 2025. According to reports, its annual value may reach $200 million.
Patrick Mahomes,
Being one of the top stars in the NFL, Mahomes receives a high salary.
In September, the 28-year-old quarterback and the Kansas City Chiefs reached an agreement to restructure his $450 million, 10-year contract. The current league MVP earns $56.85 million this season, $44.5 million the following season, $50 million in 2025, and $56.76 million in 2026 under the amended agreement.
Last season, Mahomes set a team record for passing yards with 5,250 yards, a league-high 41 touchdown passes, and just 12 interceptions.
Mike Trout
Trout held the largest contract in MLB history before to Ohtani.
In March 2019, the slugging outfielder signed a $120-year, $426.5 million contract with the Angels. Over the last five seasons, the three-time AL MVP has only played in 424 of Los Angeles’ 708 regular-season games due to injury.
2011 saw Trout, now 32, make his big league debut. With 1,489 career games played, he is a.301 hitter with 368 home runs and 940 RBIs.
