Shohei Ohtani Secures Record-Breaking $700 Million, 10-Year Deal with Dodgers

The Braves can breathe a sigh of relief as nemesis Juan Soto, formerly with the Nationals and Padres, was traded to the Yankees this week, reducing the number of encounters with the formidable hitter for Atlanta. However, a new challenge awaits the Braves in the form of baseball sensation Shohei Ohtani, who has inked an unprecedented 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The announcement of Ohtani’s historic deal followed days of speculation about the future of the unique two-way star after six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. This monumental contract, brokered by Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo of CAA Sports, reflects the player’s commitment to long-term success with the Dodgers.

Ohtani’s deal surpasses baseball’s previous record, held by Angels outfielder Mike Trout with a $426.5 million, 12-year contract that commenced in 2019. The average annual salary of $70 million represents a 62% increase over the previous high shared by pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. Notably, Ohtani’s average salary nearly doubles his earnings with the Angels, which were approximately $42.3 million.

The agreement includes unprecedented deferred money, strategically designed to reduce its impact on the Dodgers’ luxury tax payroll. Although details were not officially disclosed, a person familiar with the agreement shared this information with The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

Ohtani’s contract is poised to be one of the largest in sports history, potentially surpassing highs set by soccer stars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. While the Dodgers are yet to comment on the record-breaking deal, Ohtani expressed gratitude to the Angels organization and fans in an Instagram statement. He pledged to give his best to the Dodgers and the baseball world, emphasizing his commitment until the last day of his playing career.
