Prospects Carson Taylor and Darlin Pinales are lost by the Dodgers in the Rule 5 Draft

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost Carson Taylor and Darlin Pinales to the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks, respectively, during the Minor League portion of the 2023 MLB Rule 5 Draft, which was concluded during the Winter Meetings.

During the Rule 5 Draft’s Major League phase, the Dodgers made no selections or losses of players. Any player selected in the first round must play all season long for the Major League squad that made the selection, or they must be returned to their prior club.

Players who contract for five seasons or less become eligible for Rule 5, while those who sign for four seasons or more are eligible after five seasons.

To guard against their selection by another team in this year’s Rule 5 Draft, the Dodgers added Nick Frasso, Landon Knack, and Hunter Feduccia to their 40-man roster.

The Minor League round of the draft starts after the first round, and players selected have no roster limits for their new teams.

In the Triple-A phase of the draft, Pinales—who played for the ACL Dodgers and Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 2023—was chosen with the 18th overall pick. The Dominican Republic native was first signed by the Dodgers in 2019 as an international free agent.

Throughout his Minor League career, the 21-year-old has had difficulty, amassing a 5.65 ERA over 108.1 innings with a 1.62 WHIP. Despite striking out 113 batters, he gave up 83 walks.

Pinales had a great season in 2022, pitching to a 2.63 ERA over 41 innings. However, in 2023, he struggled and finished with a 9.16 ERA over 38.1 innings and a 2.19 WHIP, mostly due to 45 walks.

The Phillies selected Taylor, the fourth-round pick of the Dodgers in the 2020 MLB Draft out of Virginia Tech, 54th overall out of 63 Minor League selections.

Taylor’s first season with the High-A Great Lakes Loons was strong, but he has struggled to establish himself in the Minor Leagues.

The 24-year-old holds a career while playing for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers in 2022 and 2023.252 average,.722 on-base percentage, 809 at-bats, 23 home runs, and 103 runs scored while slugging.

He had his worst season to date in 2023, hitting 221/.310/.369 in 249 at-bats.

Prominent Dodgers prospects left out of the Rule 5 DraftDodgers prospects John Rooney, Braydon Fisher, Ryan Ward, Jerming Rosario, Carlos Duran, Edgardo Henriquez, Alec Gamboa, Yeiner Fernandez (No. 26), José Ramos (No. 19 prospect), and Kendall Williams (who participated in the 2023 Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game) might have piqued the interest of teams.

All of them will stay with the club after not being selected, but unless the Dodgers add any of them to their 40-man roster, they will all be eligible again the following season.
