Thursday bulletin time: The winners are…

The local chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America has recognized five players from the Texas Rangers. Shortstop Corey Seager was named Player of the Year, third baseman Josh Jung received the Rookie of the Year award, right-hander Dane Dunning was chosen as Pitcher of the Year, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe was voted Harold McKinney Good Guy Award winner, and center fielder Leody Taveras was honored as the Richard Durrett Hardest Working Player. Seager, Jung, and Dunning were expected choices, although Marcus Semien was also a potential candidate for top player, finishing third in AL MVP voting.

Nathan Eovaldi seemed like the frontrunner for top pitcher after a strong first half, including an All-Star selection, but he was sidelined for much of the second half. In his absence, Dunning took the lead, leading the team in innings despite starting the season in the bullpen and eventually transitioning to the rotation. Lowe, who was the Player of the Year in 2022, is known for being easy to talk to and providing insights after important wins or losses. The McKinney award is difficult to determine since many players and front-office personnel are media-friendly. Taveras overcame an oblique strain in spring training and successfully completed his first full season in the majors without being demoted to Triple A Round Rock.

The award recipients will receive their honors at the Texas Rangers Award Dinner—World Series Champions Edition on January 26. The event will take place at Globe Life Field. The evening will also include the presentation of Gold Glove awards to Lowe, catcher Jonah Heim, and right fielder Adolis Garcia, as well as Silver Slugger awards to Seager and Semien. The Rangers also mentioned there will be other presentations to celebrate their 2023 World Series victory.

Following the award ceremony, the Fan Fest event will be held on January 27. Tickets for the one-day event will be available for purchase on December 18 at rangers.com. Fan Fest features autograph sessions with players and minor leaguers from the team’s roster.

Baseball America has also named the Rangers the Organization of the Year, highlighting their success in building a strong team through their farm system and scouting efforts. This is the second time the Rangers have received this honor, with the first being in 1989. The team is being recognized for their long-term approach and not simply “buying” a championship title.
