Sydel Curry-Lee, the younger sister of NBA player Stephen Curry, is pursuing her own goals.
Sydel, the eldest of three siblings, was born in 1994 into a basketball-loving household. Her older brothers Stephen and Seth are both professional basketball players, while her father, Dell Curry, spent almost twenty years as an NBA player.
According to the former college volleyball player, “people underestimating me has been pretty much my life from the moment I started playing sports to now,” she said in 2020 to Togethxr. She overheard her peers murmuring among themselves, “Oh, that’s Steph Curry’s sister,” as she strolled across her college campus.
However, Sydel has pursued a variety of hobbies after graduating from Elon University in 2017, such as starting a podcast, blogging about lifestyle, and supporting mental health. In addition, she is set to become a mother of two and the wife of NBA player Damion Lee.
“I feel like I’ve done a really good job at creating my own person and creating my own identity outside of my brothers,” she stated.
But Sydel still has her older brothers’ support. In a video posted by the Golden State Warriors, she revealed to Steph and his wife, Ayesha Curry, that she was expecting their first child in 2021. The two could be heard screaming with utter joy. At her 2018 wedding, her brothers also participated as groomsmen.
Who is the sister of Stephen Curry, then? All of the information on Sydel Curry-Lee is provided here.
She played volleyball in college
Even though Sydel didn’t play basketball as her family did, she did play volleyball at Elon University from 2014 to 2016. Due to a dislocated knee cap, she had to redshirt her freshman year and begin playing in 2014.
Sydel recalls how underappreciated she was in college, with some even doubting her ability. “I remember one of the first things I ever heard when I was playing volleyball: ‘You’re only here because of your family.'”
In 2016, Sydel was named to the NCCSIA First Team All-State and was also named the team’s MVP. She did, however, give up volleyball in 2017 due to an injury.
“My sport has taken over a significant portion of my life and identity. I will always want to prioritize my sport over a lot of other things since I am an athlete and competitor,” she posted on Facebook. “I never thought that my first grown-up decision about my future would be something so difficult.”
In the same year, she earned her psychology degree.
She’s a big advocate for mental health
Sydel is making positive use of her platform. She discusses her personal battles with mental health in great detail on both her blog, “A Curry Girl,” and her Instagram account.
Not that I’ve had to handle mental health issues on my own, but I’ve always had a passion for them. She said to Essence in 2020, “I’ve always been interested in the human mind and helping others, but I genuinely want to, actually, save lives. “We’ve seen how many people have killed themselves in the last week or so because they believed that their lives would never get better. Hence, all I want to accomplish with my platform and business, A Curry Girl, is to eliminate the stigma associated with individuals not being able to talk about how they’re feeling and to stop living in a society where social media is just used for jokes and mocking other people.”
A podcast called Because Life was started by Sydel in May 2021. According to the podcast’s description, it “aims to de-stigmatize the discussion around mental health and offer first-hand advice on how we can all discuss the subject better as well as things we can do to improve our mental health.”
She recently discussed the value of mental health at Ferrum College in March 2023. “Today, I spoke with students at Ferrum College after brushing up on my speech abilities! I was really inspired by the strides being made in higher education by creating safe spaces where students may feel heard and seen in the course of their mental health journeys,” the user stated on Instagram.
She’s married to NBA player Damion Lee
While Damion Lee was a student at Drexel University and Sydel was at Elon University, they met at a collegiate basketball game. Damion Lee plays for the Phoenix Suns. Sydel is now married to him.
She said to Munaluchi Bride, “He was walking up the stairs, I was sitting in the stands, and we kind of made eye contact.” They went on several dates and exchanged direct messages before calling it quits as a relationship.
Regarding the suggestion, Sydel clarified that she had one request. “When the time came, my one wish for a proposal was to be in the same room as my entire family. He scheduled it for a weekend when our family would be in town for various purposes.”
On September 1, 2018, the couple tied the knot in Charlotte, North Carolina. His daughters were flower girls, and Steph’s wife, Ayesha, was her matron of honor.
Sydel posted pictures and a heartfelt message for her husband on Instagram the day after the wedding. “I love this man more than words can tell, but now I get to live my life showing it and telling him every day!” she said. Steph posted a video message, “Just wanted to say congratulations on getting married this weekend; that’s a big occasion; I know it’s crazy.” “But we also want to congratulate you on an amazing career at Elon playing volleyball—all you did for the school and the program—and wanted to give it back to you with the new locker room for Sydel Curry.”
She has a son
The couple, Sydel and Lee, welcomed Daxon Wardell-Xavier Lee into the world on November 26, 2021.
“I cannot express how happy I am to have my wonderful boy home. We are savoring every moment as newborns and are in newborn paradise,” the woman posted on Instagram.
Before Daxon was born, Sydel only gave people access to pictures of her nursery. “We want this to be his place of solace, a safe space for him to rest and feel at home,” she said. Her spouse added, “It’s a great space for us to get away from all the distractions of the outside world and focus on our baby.”
The new parents also talked candidly about how difficult it is to maintain their marriage’s spark on Sydel’s podcast after the birth of their child, describing it as “very hard.”
“We were advised to carry out the deed for a full month by someone. similar to each day of the month. We were like, “No,” when we reached day fifteen, the woman recalled. “It seems like a really difficult thing to do. It seems like it doesn’t happen very often in partnerships. Since conception is such a cerebral process, I haven’t met anyone who has maintained the spark the entire time.”
