Dallas Mavericks’ scoring sensation Luka Doncic has been a consistent force, averaging an impressive 30.5 points per game through 16 matches, ranking third in the NBA, just behind Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns.
During the Mavericks’ strong 8-2 start to the season, Doncic displayed remarkable efficiency, shooting at 52.6 percent overall and 41.7 percent from beyond the arc. However, in the subsequent six games, his shooting percentages have declined to 42.4 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from deep. This dip in form has contributed to the team’s 2-4 record in that stretch, bringing their overall standing to 10-6.
It’s important to note that Doncic’s recent shooting challenges aren’t the sole cause of the Mavericks’ struggles; deficiencies in defense and rebounding have played significant roles. Nevertheless, when a player of Doncic’s caliber faces efficiency issues, it adds another layer of difficulty to securing victories.
In the recent loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, where Doncic shot 12-27, he faced the additional challenge of an early thumb injury, warranting further examination in Dallas. With Doncic not performing at his peak and the absence of Dereck Lively II for the second time this season, the Mavericks faced a formidable challenge.
Speaking about the Clippers’ physicality, Doncic acknowledged its impact, stating, “I think they play really great defense, so that’s what holds us back a little bit.”
Despite the recent dip in efficiency, Doncic maintains an impressive overall shooting percentage of 48.7 percent and 39.4 percent from beyond the arc for the season. His well-rounded contributions, averaging 30.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 7.8 assists, highlight his significance to the team. The Mavericks, currently in third place in the West, look to bounce back during their upcoming homestand.
