A Possible Free Agent Target for the Yankees: Gio Urshela

Outside of the trade market, the available infield upgrades are among the worst in recent memory, and this is happening in the midst of one of the worst free agent classes in years. Given the Yankees’ current roster—Gleyber Torres at keystone for another year, Anthony Volpe rising at shortstop, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu still under contract, and Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswaldo Peraza waiting in the wings—a large infield upgrade isn’t high on their list of offseason needs, which is good news.

It’s too late to make up for the obvious error of basically trading Urshela for Josh Donaldson after 2021, but fixing the many bottom-of-the-roster holes that have appeared since that bad trade may be helped by bringing the third baseman back on a minor league deal.

Although he only provides minor assistance, the Yankees have shown in the past that they can make good use of his skills, especially considering that Rizzo and LeMahieu are unlikely to have a fully healthy season under their belts right now and that Peraza could be sent packing in a major trade. The Yankees may be hesitant to give him all 600 of the plate appearances that Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson will be missing next season, even if he isn’t traded. At the age of 32, Gio Urshela has achieved free agency for the first time in his career, so he may be joined by an old acquaintance.

This essаy prоbаbly wоuldn’t be hаppening if Perаzа hаd exceeded а 49 оPS+ in his mаjоr leаgue оppоrtunities lаst yeаr. The Yаnkees аre in а bаd spоt becаuse оf his rооkie-yeаr disаster. He mаy nоt be аble tо cаrry аn entire lineup, but he cаn prоvide sоme much-needed stаbility. Giо wоn’t likely be а mаjоr vоid in yоur lineup, whether yоu use him аs а regulаr pаrt-timer оr аs а stоpgаp fоr injuries, even if he dоesn’t fully recоver.

The Yankees’ offseason success will likely hinge on their ability to sign a star player like Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Juan Soto, but behind all the hype, it’s more important to make sure the lineup doesn’t have any holes when things don’t go as planned. At the very least, we get that when we reunite with Urshela.
