In the Lakers’ victory over the Utah Jazz, LeBron James created NBA history by becoming the first player to ever reach 39,000 points in a regular season. His scoring total is so high that it surpasses the sum of points that Giannis Antetokounmpo and Stephen Curry have scored in their careers combined.
LeBron now has 39,038 points in his career after scoring 26 points in the Lakers’ loss against the Mavericks. Over the course of his 14-year NBA career, Stephen Curry has scored 22,123 points, while Giannis Antetokounmpo has scored 16,694 points. LeBron’s all-time total is 221 points higher than their combined total of 38,817.
Together, Curry and Giannis’ season averages of 29.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists and 29.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists, respectively, will shortly eclipse James’ totals. But it’s evident how amazing James’ scoring career has been given that they are both two-time league MVPs and are ten years into their careers.
Given that James has the same total number of MVPs as the two put together, the point total does make some sense.
LeBron James is searching for additional scoring achievements.
James must overcome additional obstacles during the regular season after surpassing all previous scoring leaders, a record many believed would never be broken. Although he has already surpassed everyone else in the record-breaking distance, he still has more records to break in the game. James will likewise join the exclusive group of players with 40,000 points very soon; this group will probably stay empty for a very long time.
Not too far off from being the greatest scorer in basketball history, he only needs a few thousand points to surpass the legendary Oscar Schmidt of Brazil. Even though he will always have to listen to stories about his arguments with Michael Jordan to be the greatest player of all time, he can relax knowing that he had such a profound effect on the game that no one else in history can truly lay claim to having scored the most points in sports history.
James is already shattering records for a player in their 21st year of NBA play, averaging 25.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 6.7 assists this season. James is also attempting to establish the benchmarks by which all great players will be measured, since it appears that the current generation of players can outplay the greats of the past. He is leaving a lasting legacy in the sport that will never be forgotten.
It might be argued that Stephen Curry, who initiated the league’s transition to three-point shooting, had a comparable influence on the game. However, even his career achievements pale in comparison to what LeBron has accomplished. Giannis is still a few years away from peak performance, but as his skill set develops, his physicality-focused style of play will progressively shift. Will he be able to continue playing for 21 years or longer and score 25 points or more on average? Although we don’t know for sure, it doesn’t seem likely.
