The Yankees and others have free agency to solve the Cody Bellinger enigma

Just when Cody Bellinger was about to break into the league’s elite group of players, he plummeted.

When Bellinger’s stock was supposed to keep falling—after the finest team at cultivating talent had given up on him, no less—he recovered.

Despite hitting 47 home runs in 2019, Bellinger is likely not the Most Valuable Player.

He most certainly isn’t the.165-hitting, unplayable lineup black hole from 2021.

Did he return last season as the more contact-oriented, solid-if-not-spectacular player?

The Yankees aren’t the only ones interested in signing the most sought-after free agent center fielder in baseball; every team in the league is.

The 28-year-old outfielder, who has been as good as it gets and as bad as it gets at various points in his career, is one of the most erratic free agents.

Bellinger won a Gold Glove with the Dodgers and ranked sixth in MLB in home runs (111) and on-base percentage (.928) from his rookie year of 2017 through the 2019 season. He also ranked eleventh in the league in OPS.

Following his World Series victory, Bellinger underwent shoulder surgery and has since seemed unrecognizable.

The ex-MVP was non-tendered by the Dodgers, a team known for its mastery of talent maximization.

Agent Scott Boras has maintained throughout that Bellinger’s revival after the 2020 operation was evidence of his good health.

The fact that Bellinger’s second ascent was different from his first also raised concerns about his recovery season.

His career-low average exit velocity was 87.9 mph.

According to the quality of contact, Bellinger should have had a batting average of.270, but he only managed a.307 average.

His 37-point differential was the tenth-highest in baseball, leading some to speculate that his best performances were influenced by luck to some extent.

Perhaps Bellinger’s stellar statistics betrayed his intelligence and ability to adapt to the game.

There was less of a motivation to swing forcefully in pursuit of getting beneath pitches since fly balls were not turning into home runs at the same rate as in 2018 and 2019.

Bellinger had a high strikeout rate even when he was playing well for Los Angeles.

Although he remade himself with the Cubs by putting his bat on the ball, flying it across the field, and using his speed to find hits, he posted a career-best in strikeout rate (15.6%, 20th-best in all of baseball). Especially impressive were his statistics while dealing with two strikes.

For a Yankees team that ranked sixth-worst in runs scored last season, a 28-year-old left-handed bat with pop, improving contact rates, and the Bellinger pedigree (including the actual pedigree, as the son of former Yankees utility man Clay Bellinger) would be a perfect fit.

In 2025, when Anthony Rizzo’s contract will expire, Bellinger could play first base and solidify his position in center field until Jasson Dominguez’s return.

Even though Bellinger’s bat isn’t guaranteed every game, the team can’t afford to lose out on another megadeal after suffering through long contracts.

If the deal to pay Bellinger almost $200 million falls through, it would be a huge setback for a team that is already burdened by long-term contracts that have failed (most notably Giancarlo Stanton’s).

If Bellinger isn’t available, the top center fielders right now are Harrison Bader and Kevin Kiermaier, two solid defenders whose bats and durability are up for debate.

Bellinger, who is he? One bidder who has to find out is the Yankees.
