Why the baseball card of Texas Rangers all-star Josh Jung is being sold for $10,000

ATLANTA — Baseball card collectors were enthralled with a new treasure hunt when Texas Rangers All-Star Josh Jung disclosed that his autographed Topps cards included some of his own hand-drawn sketches. The Texas Tech and San Antonio rookie third basemen confirmed the existence of these unique cards on social media by replying to a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that included a defaced Jung trade card that was being sold for $10,000 on eBay. In the article, Jung shared his amusement and said it was a great Easter egg to add to the pastime. He also hinted that collectors may be in for more surprises down the road.

Jung’s original artwork, created in blue Sharpie, is featured on the one-of-a-kind 2023 Topps Heritage Real One rookie card. It has his signature, glasses, pencil-thin moustache, and jersey number, 6. The card also has a “Go Rangers!” phrase in the upper left corner, and a 1/1 stamp in the upper right corner attests to its exclusive nature.

Although a search on eBay turned up no results for this particular card, it’s possible that the card or another one with Jung’s drawings will show up there eventually. Unsigned copies of the card currently sell for between $96 and $300 on the auction website.

A major contributor to the Texas Rangers winning their first World Series, Jung was a well-known member of the team.
