At least five teams, including the Mets and the Yankees, have expressed interest in trading for Manuel Margot, an outfielder with the Rays.
When Tampa Bay made the experienced right-handed batter available for trade at the trade deadline, the Yankees renewed their chase of him.
This summer, though, it is widely believed that Margot will be traded.
Currently, no Tampa Bay position player owes more than Margot, who is due $10 million in 2024, and the Rays need to cut salaries.
His other options include a $2 million buyout in 2025 or a $12 million option.
Given that Tampa Bay’s starting outfield consists of Jose Siri in center and Randy Arozarena and Josh Lowe on either side, he is considered replaceable.
Margot, who celebrated her 29th birthday in September, is an auxiliary component.
His career total of one above-average OPS+ is in 2022, but he is a solid defender and runner.

If the Yankees are unable to get left-handed hitters and top-tier defenders like Cody Bellinger or Kevin Kiermaier, Margot would provide insurance in center field.

This offseason, the Yankees’ interest was initially reported by The Athletic.
